First Look Dracula

You're never far away from another interpretation of Dracula and it seems that NBC and SkyLiving themselves are getting in on the act with former star of The Tudors, Jonathan Rhys Meyers playing the titular role in their co-production. Carnivale creator Daniel Knauf will be running the series along with creator Cole Haddon. In this ten part series, Meyers is playing the role of Alexander Grayson, who poses as an American entrepeneur who wants to bring modern science into Victorian London and it doesn't take him much time to make an impression on a variety of characters upon his arrival. One of the significant people Alexander makes an impression on is Mina murray, played by Arrow actress Jessica De Gouw - the love interest of Jonathan Harker (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), a journalist desperate to make it in high society and in the trailer for the series, it seems that Alexander and Mina have something of a past and he's reluctant into making her into a vampire. Other principal cast members include former Merlin actress Katie McGrath (she's popping up everywhere nowadays) as Lucy Westenra, Nonso Anozie as RM Renfield, the only confidant that Alexander seems to have and the more antagonist Lady Jane (played by Victoria Smurfit) and Thomas Kretschmann as Abraham Van Helsing. While we probably don't need yet another adaptation of Bram Stoker's classic novel, this does look genuinely stunning and it seems that the series is going for a more sympathetic take with Dracula too. Jonathan Rhys Meyers seems perfect for the role and the rest of the cast look good too. I'll definitely be watching this series when it airs on SkyLiving.Press Release: http://www.spoilertv.com/2012/07/dracula-nbc-and-sky-living-hd-announce.htmlSeason 1 Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Z1jVcmDH43YDracula will premiere on Fridays in the autumn on NBC and will air on SkyLiving soon.

Varadkar opens vital N2N3 link road

First road to be part-funded by NAMA
Project is good for transport, jobs & communities
Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Leo Varadkar has opened the long-awaited N2/N3 link road in west Dublin, the first road project to be funded with assistance from NAMA.
The Minister was joined at the launch in Blanchardstown of the €20.55 million project by the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Cian O’Callaghan.
“It is particularly significant that this road has been funded with assistance from NAMA, the first time that NAMA has helped to finance a new road project. I want to see more such co-operation between NAMA and road development in the future,” Minister Varadkar said.
“This road is more than just a link between two motorways and an alternative route to and from the airport. It’s about providing vital infrastructure to encourage businesses to settle in the area, and take traffic and heavy vehicles away from other roads. The project also includes off-road bike lanes to encourage more people to cycle.
“It will open up new employment opportunities in Tyrrelstown, Blanchardstown, Clonsilla, Ongar and further afield. I understand that one local employer is already planning to develop a site along the road and create new jobs. I have no doubt that my colleagues in Fingal County Council will do everything to assist potential start-ups and established businesses to set up and grow.”
Work started in September 2011 on the €20.55 million project, which received funding of €6 million from the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport. The remainder was sourced by Fingal County Council and NAMA.
The area has been zoned specifically to encourage employment, with zones for science & technology developments, warehousing, light industrial and office accommodation. It is already home to Bristol Myers Squib, IBM and eBay.
The road itself has been designed to be future-proof, with essential infrastructure pre-installed under and alongside the road, so there should be no need for anyone to dig it up again for a very long time.
It commences at Church Road close to Tyrrelstown and joins the N2 at the Cherryhound interchange. Six roundabouts have been constructed along the route to link with existing local roads and provide access points to future development lands.
Ends

If you were at our Evening Songs gig at Christ Church Cathedral last week you’ll know that the stars of the show were undoubtedly the UCD Choral Scholars, who took the music of Young Wonder, Heathers and Ham Sandwich and made it as magical and beautiful as the surroundings. With a large repertoire ranging from art to popular music, and stretching from the medieval to the contemporary in style, Ireland’s leading collegiate choral ensemble give many major concerts throughout the academic year, both nationally and internationally.

Sermon for Trinity Sunday 26th May 2013

‘ . . . endurance produces character, , and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us’. Romans 5:4-5
Endurance doesn’t suit the spirit of our times. Instant gratification is what is wanted now. Endurance character and hope might have been fine things in the past, but they demanded commitment and work.. Enthusiasm for discipline, for commitment, for working at things is not plentiful. Instead of seeking the qualities of which Saint Paul writes, we go in the opposite direction; we feel we shouldn’t ask people to think, that everything should be dumbed down, made simple; to be complicated is likely to lead to being accused of being elitist.
Yet a moment’s thought would tell us that the world is not becoming simpler, it becomes more complex by the day. Technology, science, medicine—each field becomes more and more difficult for an outsider to understand. So, on one hand, there is a popular mood that says everything should be simple and on the other there is a world of increasing complexity. The Church has tended to go down the popular route, not applying our minds to things, and dumbing things down; we think that if we make everything as simple as possible, then we will be more attractive. Except, just as we would expect in other fields of knowledge, in church teaching there are some things that cannot be dumbed down; our understanding of God as the Trinity is something that cannot be made easy.
One of the problems Christians have with the media is that God cannot be simplified. God is not simple – no matter how hard you try you cannot make God fit into the simple terms of a newspaper headline. All the words in the dictionary only start to explain God.
Trinity Sunday reminds us once a year that God is not like anything or anyone we can imagine. God cannot be fitted into the mental capacities of the human brain. We can use all the terms from mathematics and geometry and science and philosophy; we can take all the ideas from art and from literature; we can take all of human knowledge and put it together and we would still not have God.
‘endurance produces character’, says Saint Paul, writing to the Christians in Rome in this morning’s Epistle, and for a man with a powerful intellect like Paul, endurance would mean serious thinking. Paul would want us to try to think about God, intimidating as such a thought is to us.
Such endurance can give us a headache! When we come to church, when we try to understand the confusing things that all of us encounter from time to time, when we reach those moments in life when we ask what on earth this life is about, we are dealing with things we cannot cope with. It’s like trying to imagine the whole universe and then trying to think about what’s beyond it.
It is not in the spirit of our time to think about such things. We do not like what we cannot control. We do not wish to imagine things we cannot understand. The Bible is a disturbing book for our times because it doesn’t allow any possibility that people can control this world. The writers of the Bible acknowledge God as God. They do not attempt to describe him, nowhere do they sit down and say, ‘God is this, this and this’. Instead we get just tiny glimpses.
Belief in God in the Bible comes as a consequence of the facts of the experience of God in their lives. If we are to follow the way of the Bible, we have to argue for God from our own experience. No-one can reason another person into belief. God cannot be crammed into human reason or argument. All we can do is to present what we know and allow people to decide for themselves.
The idea of God is not something which will fit into any explanation we can give. God is God, he is who he is, he cannot be controlled, he cannot be simplified, he most certainly cannot be dumbed down.
This day, this Trinity Sunday, this day when we remember God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit, prompts us at least once in a year to think about God as he is. In a world where laziness is a sign of the times we live in, it is not for Christians to go down that path, instead we need to listen to Paul’s instruction, ‘endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us.’

Higher education trending what do students want to study and why

Last month the Irish Higher Education Authority (HEA) published an analysis of the last five years of student applications to the country’s universities and institutes of technology. This revealed some interesting trends. Unsurprisingly, student interest in construction-related courses (including architecture, surveying, civil engineering and planning) has, in the wake of the near-collapse of the Irish construction industry, waned significantly. Over the five-year period to 2013 first preference applications declined by 55.3 per cent. Given that some of the academic departments affected had, only six or so years ago, been dashing for growth during the boom, this has created major problems in some institutions that had seriously over-invested in this field.
No other subject area has suffered anything quite as dramatic over the period, but other big losers were business and law, together suffering a decline in applicants of nearly 13 per cent over the same period. Interestingly some of the main growth areas have been computing, engineering and science. The re-emergence of computing as a popular choice for students – applications have grown by over 50 per cent in five years – is remarkable, given that for much of the past decade students (and their parents, teachers and guidance counsellors) were concluding that this was an industry in decline and to be avoided. But the emergence of some key companies as economic powerhouses – Apple and Google spring to mind – changed all that.
What does all of this tell us? Mainly that today’s news about economic and industrial developments determines a good many student choices. However the rationale behind these choices is pretty questionable. By the time these students enter the labour market the developments that caused the economic trends have long passed, and some other events will create different effects. Students who entered universities to study civil engineering in 2006 when construction was booming entered the labour market four years or so later when it had imploded. People who wouldn’t touch computing in the same year because they were convinced that the dot.com collapse earlier in the decade had destroyed the industry will have noticed that when they were ready for their first jobs the IT sector was one of the few to be growing aggressively.
We also know from British studies that students are looking more closely at the economic career benefits of particular disciplines before choosing their courses. That of course is a doubtful practice if those benefits cannot be securely predicted over a period of time, or if such predictions are based on palpably wrong assumptions. So how should such choices be made? There is no perfect answer, but one that is as good as any other is to choose according to talent and interest. If you feel passionate or engaged or stimulated about something, then that’s very likely a good subject to study. But don’t assume that today’s newspaper headlines are of any relevance to the success of a particular career to be begun four or five years from now. They aren’t.
